GMA X3000

Duo is the baseline. It's based around revised versions of the mobile Core 2 Duo processors Intel launched in autumn 2006, along with laptop-friendly incarnations of the 965 desktop chipset brought to market almost a year ago. The key chipset, the 965GM, brings Intel's latest integrated graphics core, the GMA X3000, to Centrino for a smoother Windows Vista experience and better-looking movie playback.

Foxconn Announces X38A Digital Life Motherboard

The X38A is compatibility with both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. The motherboard will support a maximum of 8GB DDR2 1066/800/667MHz RAM or 4GB DDR3 1333/1066/800MHz RAM. This provides true flexibility to consumers who don't have plans to take the DDR3 path right now.The X38A fully supports the latest industry technologies; with three PCIe x16 slots (including two slots supporting ATI CrossFire running at dual x16 bandwidth), PCIe Generation 2.0 support for future high-performance graphics cards, and support for forthcoming Intel® 45nm processors.FoxconnÙs proprietary Cool Pipe design effectively removes heat from the critical NB, SB and VRM areas, and with an optional low-noise fan on the NB heatsink and Cool Fan control in the BIOS, you can easily configure your system for an effective combination of passive and active cooling.Other enthusiast features include onboard CMOS and On/Off/Reset buttons, FoxOne™ Windows-based system monitoring and overclocking utility, and extensive BIOS tuning capability via the Fox Central Control Unit (FCCU) BIOS menu.

Court Reverses Pro-Spam Rule

California federal court has dissolved a restraining order against SpamCop.net, just a day after ordering the antispam service to stop warning warn ISPs about complaints of spam coming from their networks.Judge Saundra Brown Armstrong of the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California dissolved a temporary restraining order against IronPort Systems, which owns SpamCop, according to a statement Wednesday from IronPort. The judge granted the order Monday in a case pitting IronPort against online marketing company OptInRealBig.com. Attorneys for OptInRealBig asked for an immediate injunction against SpamCop, saying SpamCop's reports have caused OptInRealBig to lose contracts with ISPs and customers. After analyzing opposition papers filed by IronPort after the injunction, the judge decided that "the interests of justice favor dissolution" of the order, the company says.IronPort purchased SpamCop in November 2003 from Julian Haight, the founder and lone operator of the service. At the time of the purchase, IronPort, which sells networking hardware for managing and securing e-mail traffic, promised to invest about $1 million to upgrade the service and keep it running.IronPort is thankful for the ruling and the "expedited consideration of its (opposition) papers," the statement says. A preliminary hearing will take place next week. IronPort is optimistic that it will prevail in the case, according to an IronPort spokesperson.

Why Intel is investing in Social Computing

In my post Testing Business Value in Social Networking I shared our results of extensive exploration to determine if there is value in adding professional networking for employee use. The exploratory results moved us forward to creating a modular and integrated social framework to consolidate current "islands" of blogs, forums and wikis and add new capabilities such as the people connection that professional networking brings. We are 1.5 weeks away from launching the first phase of bringing robust social tools in-house to augment and improve the way our employees connect and collaborate today. I get asked a lot about "Why" we are doing this and the value we believe we will bring to Intel. I wanted to share with you the reasons.

Intel Pentium 4 2.53 GHz

This is Intel's latest processor (2.8 GHz Pentium 4 is being launched as we speak, which should result in a significant price cut for the 2.53 GHz). The early Pentium 4's were criticised for not being powerful enough. However, with clock speeds exceeding 2 GHz, the Pentium 4 has surely confounded those critics. In the pictures above you can see the Intel D845GBV motherboard, with the tiny Pentium 4 2.53 GHz at the top, which fits into the microPGA478 socket. It is made using the 0.13 micron process (so the transistors are packed more closely). This is signifcantly smaller than the first generation of Pentium 4s. The D845GBV board is an integrated one, featuring graphics, sound and also 4 USB 2 ports (which can be expanded to 6). It supports bus speeds of 400 or 533 MHz. If you prefer to bypass the integrated graphics you can just insert an AGP card (upto 4X). However, for most purposes the on-board graphics seemed fine. Also this motherboard supports cheaper DDR266 SDRAM memory. It is nice to see that you can get genuine Intel motherboards that do not need very expensive RAMBUS memory! I tested the motherboard with 512 MB DDR266 memory and a WD 100GB 7200rpm IDE drive. There are of course the usual standard features on the motherboard, like support for Ultra ATA 100 drives and PS/2 connectors. However, I could not get my Adaptec 2940U2W's bios to boot on the motherboard (although once booted up SCSI devices were recognised).

Intel Capital Brazil Technology Fund to Accelerate Technology Innovation and Growth

SAO PAULO, Brazil, March 28, 2006 – Recognizing Brazil’s position as South America’s largest economy and its increasing importance as a technology leader, Intel Capital, the investment arm of Intel Corporation, has created a US$50 million venture capital fund to promote technology growth in Brazil.
“Intel Capital’s investments will help stimulate technological innovation and growth of Brazil’s rapidly developing entrepreneurial community,” said Intel Corporation CEO Paul Otellini, who is in Brazil this week for discussions with industry and government leaders.
The fund will be used to invest in companies that can benefit from the rapid growth of technology in Brazil, and provide local businesses with capital to help nurture important technologies and products developed for local use. Examples include hardware, services (broadband infrastructure and mobile wireless solutions using WiMAX technology, among other services), local content developers/providers, digital health solutions, IT service providers and software solutions.
“Intel Capital is a global investor and we recognize the importance of Brazil as an emerging market leader,” said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital. “Intel Capital plays a critical role in Intel’s wide-ranging efforts to stimulate technological innovation in the countries where we invest. We anticipate that the establishment of the Brazil fund will inspire even more innovative business models among Brazilian entrepreneurs, and stimulate greater distribution of technology to the people of Brazil.”
Intel Capital has been a leading venture capital investor in Brazil since 1999, investing over US$35 million in 13 companies. In 2005, Intel Capital announced four local investments in Digitron, TelecomNet, Certsign and Neovia.
